Stanley’s of Marden
Many thanks to all the customers who use the air machine at Stanley’s of Marden, the Harvest Energy Petrol Station, Albion Road, Marden.

We have now raised in excess of £10,000 and for those of you who are unaware, all proceeds (50p a time!) are donated to the Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance. The air ambulance runs purely on donations and provides and invaluable service.

On more than one occasion, we have unfortunately had the machine broken into and the much needed money stolen. A high security device has been installed to eliminate thefts in the future.

If so, there is a new photographer on the block and I would love to work with you to produce corporate headshots that will reflect well on your business.

I love to work with people and photograph them so I specialise in all forms of portrait photography. In my spare time I am an accomplished underwater photographer and also love to work with models and artists to produce beautiful images. Portcullis Insurance
Cyber and data risks insurance protects your business should it suffer a data breach or an attack by a malicious hacker, impacting your computer and industrial control systems.
The Hiscox Cyber Readiness Report 2017 states that more than 57% of UK businesses have been attacked in the last year, with SME firms hit hardest; the average estimated cost to the business is £25,736; and only 36% of UK businesses, despite the very real threat, have Cyber Insurance.
If your business:

  • Handles sensitive customer data (names, addresses, bank details, merchant payment services etc.)
  • Are reliant on computers and industrial control systems to trade
  • Have a website

You will need Cyber and data risks protection.

  • Breach Costs – unauthorised access; use or disclosure of personal data
  • Cyber Business Interruption – loss of income and increased costs of working
  • Hacker Damage – corruption, misuse or theft of programs
  • Cyber Extortion – third party ransom demands
  • Privacy Protection – claim made against the business for release of personal information or data
  • Media Liability – alteration of email and website content that results in a claim made against the business

Portcullis are offering a complimentary meeting to Marden businesses and manufacturers to describe the different types of Cyber attacks, typical impacts, and the insurance solutions currently available.

Marden Post Office
On behalf of the Marden Business Forum, we’d like to wish Will & Jill Welby a happy retirement from the Marden Post Office and thank them for all their hard work over the past years.
‘Good Luck’ to Nav in Crowhurst & Tompsetts (The Premier) in taking it on. Having lost our Bank, it was vital that our Post Office should remain open, it appears to be in safe hands!
What will happen to the Old post Office is uncertain at the moment, but all I can say, is, the Purchaser has the wellbeing of Marden at heart and he wishes to keep it as retail use…
Any entrepreneurs out there with some great ideas????

We are Cornwallis Academy and we are situated in Linton on the way into Maidstone.  We are looking to engage with local businesses to help develop our student’s employability skills and to help us become aware of what local companies are looking for from young people.

Would any members of the Forum be prepared to come and talk to a year assembly about their business, career or work area.  We are running Careers Assemblies for the week of 16th November from 1.10 pm.  The talk would only need to be 10 minutes long. Do get in touch if you would be able to help.

We run many events with local employers and would be happy to come and talk to you about how we could work together.

Dr Nigel Minett – Charity Dinner – Raffle

Dr Nigel Minett, was a GP at Marden Medical Centre for over 20 years. He died 10 ½ weeks after being diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in January 2012. He was 54.

Nigel’s daughter, Rebecca is organizing a Charity Dinner Dance in aid of Pancreatic Cancer UK on November 28th at the London Beach Hotel in Tenterden. Such was Nigel’s popularity, the 100 tickets sold out in just over 24 hours.

Rebecca is hoping to run an auction and raffle on the night, and there must be many among our membership that remember Nigel, if anyone would like to donate an auction or raffle prize. Any such donations would of course be acknowledged in the programme.

Rebecca would also like to collect some memories/tributes to Nigel if anyone would like to contribute any comments – these are to be displayed at the Dinner Dance.

Pancreatic Cancer is known as ‘the silent killer’. In a recent survey, 71% of those asked could not name a single symptom of the disease which is rarely diagnosed until it is in an advanced stage. Unlike many other cancers, survival rates have not improved in 40 years – and only 3% of those diagnosed survive 5 years.

Rebecca has also set up a Just Giving page for the event which can be found at www.justgiving.com/charity-dinner-dance/

All best wishes
Kate Minett

For more information, please contact Rebecca on charitydinnerdance@hotmail.com

2014 / 2015 Membership

A big thank you to the 84 local businesses that have renewed their Marden Business Forum membership for 2014 / 2015.

Those that haven’t renewed for 2014 were emailed notification earlier this week that your membership will expire on Monday 30th June, unless you renew.

Road Closure: 1st July

At 12:00 on Tuesday 1st July a funeral procession will pass through Pattenden Lane, en route to Marden Church from the Stliebridge Caravan Site.

The procession will include a number of vehicles, so please be aware access around Marden Village will be restricted during this time.

More Time for Flood-hit residents and businesses

MBC News Release: Residents and businesses hit by flooding this winter have been given more time to apply for council tax discounts and business rates relief from Maidstone Borough Council. The deadline for applications has now been extended to 1st September 2014.

Maidstone council’s Head of Revenues and Benefits Shared Service, Stephen McGinnes, said: “We know there are still lots of residents and businesses who were affected by the flooding who haven’t applied for the discount, so we’ve extended the deadline to make sure everyone has as much opportunity as possible to receive this support.”

Anyone who pays the council tax or business rates on a property that flooded – including private rental tenants – can apply for the schemes. Details and application forms are available at www.maidstone.gov.uk/winter, or call 01622 602003 for more details.

KCC move signs at MBF Request

Lobbying by the MBF to KCC Highways Department, has achieved KCC’s agreement to relocate the signage at the junction of Pattenden Lane and Underlyn Lane to provide a better view when exiting Pattenden Lane.
The signs were in line of sight for Van drivers, obscuring the view of the highway.

Our next event

Unfortunately our networking event on 3rd July has had to be postponed until September.
Keep an eye on the website for further details.
