Clive Allcorn – Headshot Photography for your business

Is your online presence up to scratch? Are you still using selfies in your staff personal profiles? Do you struggle to find suitable images for your company publications and marketing materials? If so, there is a new photographer on the block and I would love to work with you to produce corporate headshots that will reflect well on your business.

Firstly let me introduce myself as I am new to the Marden Business Forum. After a 40 year career in Kent Police, I have decided to turn my passion for photography into a business. I love to work with people and photograph them so I specialise in all forms of portrait photography. In my spare time I am an accomplished underwater photographer and also love to work with models and artists to produce beautiful images. As a new business, my prices are reasonable but my work is excellent.

Portcullis Insurance
Cyber and data risks insurance protects your business should it suffer a data breach or an attack by a malicious hacker, impacting your computer and industrial control systems.
The Hiscox Cyber Readiness Report 2017 states that more than 57% of UK businesses have been attacked in the last year, with SME firms hit hardest; the average estimated cost to the business is £25,736; and only 36% of UK businesses, despite the very real threat, have Cyber Insurance.
If your business:

  • Handles sensitive customer data (names, addresses, bank details, merchant payment services etc.)
  • Are reliant on computers and industrial control systems to trade
  • Have a website

You will need Cyber and data risks protection.
Typically, and there are many variations in insurance cover provided and of course exclusions, you can be covered for:

  • Breach Costs – unauthorised access; use or disclosure of personal data
  • Cyber Business Interruption – loss of income and increased costs of working
  • Hacker Damage – corruption, misuse or theft of programs
  • Cyber Extortion – third party ransom demands
  • Privacy Protection – claim made against the business for release of personal information or data
  • Media Liability – alteration of email and website content that results in a claim made against the business

Portcullis are offering a complimentary meeting to Marden businesses and manufacturers to describe the different types of Cyber attacks, typical impacts, and the insurance solutions currently available.

Marden Post Office
On behalf of the Marden Business Forum, we’d like to wish Will & Jill Welby a happy retirement from the Marden Post Office and thank them for all their hard work over the past years.
‘Good Luck’ to Nav in Crowhurst & Tompsetts (The Premier) in taking it on. Having lost our Bank, it was vital that our Post Office should remain open, it appears to be in safe hands!
What will happen to the Old post Office is uncertain at the moment, but all I can say, is, the Purchaser has the wellbeing of Marden at heart and he wishes to keep it as retail use…
Any entrepreneurs out there with some great ideas????

Burtons Are Expanding
Burtons have just taken on an extra building in Pattenden Lane, Weald House opposite the entrance to Wheelbarrow Ind Est.

Over the last couple of years we have developed two additional strings to our business bow. We now stock and distribute an extensive range of products for canine beauty professionals (dog grooming) as well as an ever growing range of products and feeds for Koi ponds, including the BD series of drum filters, which we manufacture at our main site.

Weald House will be the centre of operations for these products, which are sold online and also provide a warm welcome to those wishing to view products in our show room and make purchases to take home. We hope to have everything up and running by the end of April.

Why not call in and have a browse? Everything you need from a small bottle of dog shampoo to a whole new filtration system for your pond!

Would any members of the Forum be prepared to come and talk to a year assembly about their business, career or work area.  We are running Careers Assemblies for the week of 16th November from 1.10 pm.  The talk would only need to be 10 minutes long. Do get in touch if you would be able to help.

We run many events with local employers and would be happy to come and talk to you about how we could work together.

Dr Nigel Minett – Charity Dinner – Raffle

Dr Nigel Minett, was a GP at Marden Medical Centre for over 20 years. He died 10 ½ weeks after being diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in January 2012. He was 54.

Nigel’s daughter, Rebecca is organizing a Charity Dinner Dance in aid of Pancreatic Cancer UK on November 28th at the London Beach Hotel in Tenterden. Such was Nigel’s popularity, the 100 tickets sold out in just over 24 hours.

Rebecca is hoping to run an auction and raffle on the night, and there must be many among our membership that remember Nigel, if anyone would like to donate an auction or raffle prize. Any such donations would of course be acknowledged in the programme.

Rebecca would also like to collect some memories/tributes to Nigel if anyone would like to contribute any comments – these are to be displayed at the Dinner Dance.

Pancreatic Cancer is known as ‘the silent killer’. In a recent survey, 71% of those asked could not name a single symptom of the disease which is rarely diagnosed until it is in an advanced stage. Unlike many other cancers, survival rates have not improved in 40 years – and only 3% of those diagnosed survive 5 years.

Rebecca has also set up a Just Giving page for the event which can be found at www.justgiving.com/charity-dinner-dance/

All best wishes
Kate Minett

For more information, please contact Rebecca on charitydinnerdance@hotmail.com

More Time for Flood-hit residents and businesses

MBC News Release: Residents and businesses hit by flooding this winter have been given more time to apply for council tax discounts and business rates relief from Maidstone Borough Council. The deadline for applications has now been extended to 1st September 2014.

Maidstone council’s Head of Revenues and Benefits Shared Service, Stephen McGinnes, said: “We know there are still lots of residents and businesses who were affected by the flooding who haven’t applied for the discount, so we’ve extended the deadline to make sure everyone has as much opportunity as possible to receive this support.”

Anyone who pays the council tax or business rates on a property that flooded – including private rental tenants – can apply for the schemes. Details and application forms are available at www.maidstone.gov.uk/winter, or call 01622 602003 for more details.

KCC move signs at MBF Request

Lobbying by the MBF to KCC Highways Department, has achieved KCC’s agreement to relocate the signage at the junction of Pattenden Lane and Underlyn Lane to provide a better view when exiting Pattenden Lane.
The signs were in line of sight for Van drivers, obscuring the view of the highway.

Our next event

Unfortunately our networking event on 3rd July has had to be postponed until September.

Pensions – Auto-enrolment

Advertisement Feature

Unlike many previous Government legislative changes the new rules apply to all UK employers regardless of their size, and all businesses will therefore be affected at some point leading up to April 2017.

All employers have been given a staging date – this is the date by which they are required to auto-enrol eligible jobholders into a qualifying workplace pension scheme. The recommended lead in time to get pension in place is 6 months.

You can find you’re staging date at www.thepensionsregulator.gov.uk – just enter your PAYE reference number (this can be found on your P35).

There is misconception that Auto-enrolment is just about setting up a pension scheme, but that is only a very small part of it. The biggest challenge for employers will be the ongoing monitoring, reporting, record keeping and compliance associated with auto-enrolment whilst also ensuring that all employees are being treated correctly and are communicated with appropriately every time they run their payroll.

For you as the employer, there are 33 new duties and responsibilities you must fulfil and the Pension Regulator has issued more than 250 pages of guidance notes to help you! Ignoring this legislation could result in fines of up to £5,000 a day being levied.

You need to act now if you have 50 or more employees and have not started your preparation.
